Why your Etsy tags are probably costing you sales
Etsy gives every listing 13 tag slots, and most sellers waste at least a few of them on near-duplicates: "mug" and "mugs," "gift" and "gifts," "cute" and "cute mug." Etsy's search already accounts for plurals and word order, so two tags like these effectively compete for the same search traffic instead of covering more ground.
What to do instead
Treat each tag slot as a different angle on the same product, not a different spelling of the same word.
- Descriptive: what it literally is ("ceramic coffee mug")
- Occasion or recipient: who it's for ("gift for dog mom", "birthday present for her")
- Style: the aesthetic ("minimalist", "boho", "vintage inspired")
- Material: what it's made of, if relevant ("ceramic", "hand poured")
A listing that covers all four angles across its 13 tags shows up in a wider range of buyer searches than one that uses 13 variations of the same two or three words.
A quick way to check your own listings
Run your current title, tags, and description through Listing Doctor. It will flag duplicate or near-duplicate tags directly, along with everything else worth fixing, ranked by how much it's actually worth.
